SOFT STARTER
Applications
A soft starter motor which has a current of 1.5-2.5 amps, is a device used with synchronous and induction motors where power of up to 12,000 kWh or more is needed to remove the restriction on the number of starts. Soft starters extend the lifespan of the electric motors, enginery and process equipment while decreasing the stress caused by voltage in the electrical distribution network and improve the operation of other consumers, etc.
Soft starter advantages over thyristor voltage regulators:
- the price is 3-4 times less
- absence of voltage unbalance in electrical distribution network
- incomparable simplicity – around 10 passive elements, instead of hundreds of low-current, and power electronics
- incomparable higher reliability
- possibility of hermetically sealed construction and outdoor installation with external temperatures from - 50°С to +50°С
- no need for maintenance and replacement of items for 20 years
Principles of operation
Operation is based on the parametric limit of the starting current of the motor and its stabilization at a given level up to the nominal rotating speed. Sinusoidal voltage is stored throughout the acceleration.
Advantages of using soft starter over direct starting
- Sharp decrease of voltage stress in the electrical distribution network
- Opportunity to start high-voltage motors from the network that would be inadequate for a direct start-up, or stand-alone generators to perform, without overstating their power taking into account the start-up mode
- Extend the lifespan of the electric motors
- Extend the lifespan of the enginery and process equipment
- Extend the lifespan of the high-voltage protective switching and transformer electric devices and electrical networks
- Improved operation of other consumers
- Reduce engine heating by starting current caused by a sinusoidal voltage and current
